Dining Like a Viking

We recently treated our out of town guests (my parents and the Hurt family) to a unique and entertaining dining experience by taking them to Aifur, which is a restaurant dedicated to the gastronomic heritage from the Viking Age.

Located in Gamla Stan, Aifur is owned by Swedish pop-star Martin Eriksson, who is a real Viking aficianado. The restaurant is quite dark and fitted with long tables with the benches covered with sheep skins. Hanging on the walls were tapestries, shields and weapons.

Upon arriving, we were announced to the restaurant and greeted with cheers from other diners.  The custom carried on throughout the evening.

The food may have a few modern touches, but the ingredients are mainly from the Viking Age- items that could be found in Scandinavia or brought in through trade. They have a nice explanation of each dish on the menu that ties it in with the Viking history.

To begin the evening, we all enjoyed a glass of mead, which is a type of honey-wine.

For an appetizer, my dad ordered the Plate from Trögden, which included Reindeer sausage, elk sausage, Flat-smoked pork, Reindeer heart, Lamb steak and Cheddar cheese..

For dinner, we enjoyed Indulgence of the Raven Lord,  which was Marinated flap steak, served with a parsnip cake, sprouts, juniper-smoked pig’s side, baby onions.

My mom chose the vegetarian entree, which consisted of barley mixed with cheese and vegetables.
Belle enjoyed her traditional selection of chicken and rice baby food.
Notice our silverware for the evening!
Throughout the evening, we were serenaded by music inspired by the Viking Age.

Overall, it was a fun, historical  and unique experience that was enjoyed by all.
