Geiranger, Norway

Our last port of call was Geiranger, and words simply cannot describe the spectacular views of waterfalls, mountains, and snow. Geirangerfjord is known as the real jewel of the Norwegian fjords. With its characteristic S shape, high waterfalls and quintessential Norwegian town.

We had booked an excursion for the afternoon, so that morning we got off to explore the small town of Geiranger. When I say small, I mean very small. Only a few hundred people live here (so our cruise boat brought the population up exponentially!). It was a very quaint town with a few stores.

Belle wasn't in the shopping mood, so her and daddy went on a walk while Mommy shopped.

Our favorite store was a Swedish chocolate shop. The chocolates were delicious and unique. We tried chocolate covered brunost, which is a brown cheese made from goat's milk. It was surprisingly delicious.

That afternoon, we were supposed to take a bus ride to Mt. Dalsnibba; however, plans were altered at the road was still covered with snow. Instead, we were taken to two overlooks within the town.

Overlook #1

Belle wasn't impressed with the scenery and decided to nap instead.

After leaving the first overlook, we drove through part of the mountain pass. Atop the pass is the only flat land in Geiranger. There were a few houses and small farms, and a gorgeous, crystal-clear lake. Our guide informed us that this is a popular swimming spot for the locals; however, they only jump in for a few seconds.

We then proceeded to the next overlook.

Overlook #2

Belle finally decided to wake up....although she was a little grumpy....

But Grammy can always make her happy!

Now it was time to get back on the boat, and sadly that mean that our Norwegian adventure was over.

Sailing out of the fjord, we passed the famous seven sisters waterfalls and the suitor waterfall. Both falls face one another across the fjord, and the Suitor is said to be trying to woo the sisters opposite.

Belle on the balcony watching the view as we sail out of the fjord.

The Bridal Veil is another waterfall in the fjord, so named because it falls delicately over one rocky edge, and when seen back lit by the sun it has the appearance of a thin veil over the rocks.

Norway promises to those who seek the spirit of Norway will find peril, adventure, beauty and charm. We experienced it all in this gorgeous and scenic country. Disney's Maelstrom ride ends by saying, "...Norway spirit will ways be, always be adventure."....and I couldn't agree more.
