Christmas Markets

Christmas Markets in Sweden open on the first Sunday of Advent and stay open until Christmas Eve.  Christmas markets are a tradition in Sweden, as some markets have been around for centuries.   The markets can differ quite a bit from one another... some more traditional (decorations, local arts & crafts, traditional delicacies like jams, sausages and cookies), others a bit more modern (clothing, jewelry, etc ).

The market in Gamla Stan is the most famous and most traditional Christmas Market in Stockholm. It is located in the heart of the Old Town at Stortorget square, and can trace its origin back to King Gustav Vasa in 1523. The little red stalls sell Swedish Christmas sweets, smoked sausages, reindeer- and elk meat and other Christmas delicacies, glögg and a range of Swedish crafts.
