Yesterday, Cyle and I went to an expat coffee group. The group we decided to attend is called the Global Expat Centre Stockholm. This group organizes several social outings for free, but for a membership fee, I can take language training classes and enjoy other services. We went yesterday to get acquainted with group and get more information.
We found everyone there to be very welcoming. Most of the people attending had lived in Stockholm for several years, so we were definitely the newbies to the group. The first hour, they invited everyone to socialize over coffee and cake (the Swedes sure like their coffee and pastries!). I met people from all around the world. There were people there from Japan, Netherlands, France, South Africa and India. One of the French ladies also had a one year old little boy that Belle enjoyed playing with. They shared puffs and sippy cups ;). I got the mom's number so we can have future play dates. The lady from South Africa (Joey) lives very close to me and she also offered to fika. She mentioned that she has a friend from Great Britain who also has young children and is new to the area and is planning a play date when the friend returns from her holiday.
After socializing for while, the group had a more formal meeting where they presented a brief information session about Christmas in Stockholm. They handed out information about all the Christmas stuff that will be happening in the next month. I can't wait to experience Christmas in Sweden. There are so many traditions that I am looking forwarded to taking part of. Overall, the expat coffee social was a success. I'm not sure if I'll officially join the group, but it was nice to meet people and get out of the apartment.
